Author Tips & Tricks: Attracting New Followers on Twitter and Google+
This is part one in a series of articles called 'Author Tips & Tricks' that I'll be posting in the coming weeks. In an attempt to give back to the amazing online community of romance and erotica authors (and all those who self-publish), I'd like to share the best of what I've learned over the past year. I'll do my best to provide you with beneficial, well-organized information that I consider invaluable. Just my way of saying thanks.
So if you want to learn about attracting tons of new followers on Twitter, Google+ and your blog, read on!
Attracting New Followers
Two of the questions I'm asked most often are how did I gain followers on Google+ and Twitter, and how did I get people to actually like me on Facebook. (Something that continues to be a work in progress.) Why is this important? Well it's important for the obvious reasons, such as increasing potential reach and exposure for your eBooks, but also because it helps you gain legitimacy in both the eyes of your audience and your fellow authors. And as you gain more likes and follows you'll increase the likelihood of your status updates, posts and tweets showing up in timelines, newsfeeds and search engines. Which is exactly what you want.
So, what are the secrets?

- Consistency and Quality Are King: It used to be that content was king, but times have evolved. When first starting out, one of the biggest mistakes I made was simply sharing too little, and only posting my own content (a mistake new writers always seem to make). While I always made an effort to be witty, funny or a little naughty (for my erotica fans), I never really seemed to gain that much traction. I was rarely retweeted or even favorited, and no one ever responded to me. (Seriously. A good day was one interaction.) I would tweet people and they would ignore me outright, mostly because I had no followers and was obviously trying too hard. (Sound familiar?) I ended up following hundreds and hundreds of people with no one following me back, and I had no reach or influence. But after a few months, I came to two very important realizations.
- Consistency: You need to post to Facebook, Google+ and Twitter every day. No kidding. This does not mean your life has to revolve around social media. However, you do need to devote at least 15 to 30 minutes a day to maintaining your online presence. This includes answering fans, responding to comments, updating profiles, searching for promotion opportunities (like blog hops, guest posts and author interviews), or simply posting new content. As an example, your Twitter timeline should be (roughly) 30% personal tweets (similar to status updates), 30% tweets about specific content (e.g., pictures, articles, quotes), 30% retweets/favorites of others' content, and the last 10% should be about your titles or promotions you may be running. This ratio, while only an approximation, can be used for both Facebook and Google+ as well. Your willingness to share and promote other users will gain you more followers and influence, and their reciprocal sharing of your content will help you gain fans that you wouldn't have otherwise. Additionally, your increased online presence will start gaining you followers just by virtue of your consistent posts.
- Quality: But your consistency comes with the caveat of quality. If you're posting every day in an attempt to improve your reach and gain new followers, you better be posting quality content; not spam. And this can be especially difficult for authors who publish online, because self-promotion seems so important. Yet the truth is most people will find incessant posts about your eBooks to be extremely annoying. Instead, your focus should be on establishing and improving relationships with fellow authors and fans. And the best way to do that (like any relationship), is to be honest and genuine. There's a reason reality shows and TMZ are so popular. People crave real information and gossip. Self-promotion is the opposite: It's an advertisement designed to incite people to purchase a product. You need to be real. But does this mean you need to give away everything about your personal life? No. But it does mean if you find yourself playing a role instead of being yourself, you need to take a step back and reevaluate. Stop trying to be what you think people want you to be, and stop trying to force yourself to be funny or witty if you're not feeling that way. Instead, connect with your audience and let them know what you're feeling on a day-to-day basis. You'll connect with a much broader range of individuals, without question. And from those connections, followers will come.
- Engaging Your Followers: So once you've started gaining followers from your consistent, quality posting to social media networks, how do you engage them? (Meaning, how do you get them to respond to your promotions, retweet your tweets, and like your posts?) By identifying your audience and seizing opportunities.
- Identifying your audience: You need to be honest with yourself. Don't assume your audience shares your gender and age demographic. Don't assume that your audience shares the gender and age demographic most common to your genre. Basically, don't assume anything. Sign up for Google Analytics, StatCounter (real-time, free), and use the statistics provided by Blogger, Wordpress, or your hosting provider to make informed decisions. Do the majority of your visitors use Internet Explorer? Then it's likely you're targeting an older, less technically-savvy crowd. Why? Because I.E. is the default web browser for Windows, which means the visitor was not comfortable switching to an alternative browser such as Chrome or Firefox (which would suggest they were comfortable with both technology and accessing material online). Also, find out which websites your visitors are referred from (where they were before they accessed your blog), and from what country. If you write contemporary romance and you see a large influx of visitors originating from a specific site in France, find out why. Is it a forum where people are talking about you and there's a natural buzz? Was one of your stories shared by a popular foreign blogger? Was your blog linked to a popular site that specializes in your genre? All of this is valuable information you can use to further engage your followers and seize opportunities in the limited time they're available. A recent personal example would be when I noticed an extremely large influx of Russian users to my blog, a small number of whom also started following me on Twitter and liking me on Facebook. I had absolutely no idea how they found me, until I discovered the site they were originating from was a blog for taboo erotica. Someone had posted one of my stories with a link, and sure enough I was soon being visited by hundreds of horny Ruskies who liked my style.
- Seizing opportunities: When I discovered my story had been linked by the foreign erotica blog (which provided me with a new source of traffic), I immediately tried to leverage the opportunity. (Anyone else noticing my college minor in Business showing?) Instead of demanding they take down my story (which was posted without my consent, in full), I realized I had a valuable resource at hand. (Or at least I hoped I did.) So I emailed the webmasters of the blog and asked to provide them with a promotion of two exclusive short stories. What was their response? They offered to post each story one week apart, briefly promote each on the front page of the site, and do an interview with me. Two weeks later and suddenly I had received a few hundred (!) likes on Facebook from foreign individuals I'd never heard of before, and I had captured a new audience I never, ever would have found had I not taken the time to both identify my audience and seize the opportunity that became available. Yet on my part, the only effort required was sending an email and being available for a quick interview on Russian time.
So that's it for part one of Author Tips and Tricks. Feel free to include it on your blog or website, just please be kind enough to include a link back to me. And if this post helped you (or can help one of your fellow authors or bloggers), please don't hesitate to share.
Happy networking.

Sarah Fae 4K Likes Giveaway!
Hi all!
Please help me welcome Author/Blogger/Reviewer/Promoter/etc. Sarah Fae to my blog today!
Here's a little about her:
Hi there, I'm Sarah Fae from http://www.faebooks.co. uk/ I'm celebrating reaching an amazing 4000 Likes on my Facebook page.
If you haven't heard of Fae Books before, here's a little introduction to tell you what I'm all about and what sort of stuff goes on in the Fae Books world.
As I've said, I'm Sarah Fae, you can find me on http://www.facebook.com/ SarahFaeBooks Facebook as Sarah Fae Graham. I'm going on 25, I'm married and live with my husband, Shane - who is my full time carer as well as a full time Soldier - our two Bichon Frise dogs, Trixie & Teddy and our three cats, Simba, Horace and Squirt. I live in England, in the UK. Ahh, sunny England by the sea... I joke of course, it mostly rains, I also live in an Army Garrison. I'm disabled, wheelchair user, I'm in really bad health too so I take a lot of medication to get through my days. Anyway, enough about that...
I spend my days keeping everything behind the scenes of Fae Books running, booking in new tours for companies and organizations that I host for, as well as preparing to launch my own FREE introductory book tours. (If you'd like to be a Tour Host for Fae Books like this fabulous blogger may have, just go to http://www.faebooks.co. uk/p/tour-host-sign-up.html.
About 50% of my work is promoting. Promoting myself as a writer, promoting Fae Books and everyone I work with. Anyone with any kind of business, authors or bloggers etc will tell you, the hardest bit is promoting your product/work and doing it in the right places at the right times, that takes a lot of time and dedication in itself. I often don't get any sleep at all for several days in a row, because I'll be up working all the time. My Husband says I'm a Workaholic, I do kind of agree with him, but don't tell him that! Lol.
I'm addicted to giveaways, running them that is (I rarely get time to enter any lol). I love to give back to the bookish community and I love the people that help me to be able to do that, so you'll often find a bunch of giveaways over at http://www.faebooks.co. uk/
Sometimes the prizes are donated by others (writers, authors etc), but I also provide prizes myself, and post a lot of prizes out. Sometimes authors send me a bunch of swag and I'll use that in my events to give away and promote them, then send out the prizes to the winners on a monthly basis. I used to try and post as soon as people won the prizes, but I just couldn't afford to do it that way, so now I post monthly, because that's when Hubby gets paid, so we have the cash to send it all out then. It's pretty expensive sending internationally all the time, but I prefer giveaways to be open worldwide so that anyone can enter. I don't like to push anyone out if I can help it. That's just my own way of doing it though.
I (and thus Fae Books) hang out on http://www.twitter.com/FaeBooks as well as http://www.pinterest. com/FaeBooks & https://plus.google.com/ u/0/108494815406282918216 & http://uk.linkedin.com/ in/faebooks/ and I'm also hooked on http://www.goodreads. com/FaeBooks. I manage my entire TBR list on there, I use that to keep me on track with my reading. Speaking of reading, you may have guessed, I love to read. I'm really into my horror right now, but I love to read anything paranormal, supernatural, fantasy, and all of the above with any kind of romance in it too. I'll read anything that sounds good when I read the blurb and reviews, so I don't just stick to those genres.
I run a Reviewing Team over at Fae Books, I have a great bunch of 20+ girls who work with me and they review tonnes of books for writers that approach me looking for reviews. I also review too of course. I regularly take on new members to be part of the team, so if you ever fancy becoming part of it, just keep an eye out on the website and I'll put updates up when I'm taking on new members. The team and myself book up very quickly for reviews, and usually months in advance, so we only have something like four spots left available in 2013 for reviews, and we're only half way through the year! Busy, busy, busy.
So...

Taken for His
Own Playlist
I offer this
playlist of songs from Taken for His Own,
Promise Me Book #4. Use for special effects while reading, or just to enjoy!
1.
Mama, I’m Coming
Home by Ozzy Osbourne
I always
envisioned this song beginning as Sar wakes up from her dream with Theo, and it
playing as she’s rushing around, trying to get packed and out of the hotel
before he finds her. I also love the end, the notes reminiscent of Theo’s
footsteps outside her door as he bursts in to confront her. But I also like the
lyrics, imaging that Theo is speaking them to Sar.
Here I come but I ain’t the same, Mama I’m coming
home
Times gone by, seems to be, you could have been a
better friend to me, Mama I’m coming home
You took me in and you drove me out, yeah, you had
me hypnotized
Lost and found and turned around by the fire in your
eyes
You made me cry, you told me lies, but I can’t stand
to say goodbye
I could be right, I could be wrong. It hurts so bad
and it’s been so long.
Mama I’m coming home
I’ve seen your face a hundred times every day we’ve
been apart
Theo feels
betrayed by Sar, that she went back to Danial in the years he was MIA. But now
that they have shared their dream together once more, he can’t stay away from
her. He’s wants her bad but he thinks she belongs to another man. And Theo is
not the man Sar once knew; his horrible treatment in the years he was missing
have scarred him inside and out.
2.
Bad Moon Rising
This is a
popular song in horror and supernatural stories. I added it for foreshadowing, as
shortly thereafter Sar gets abducted…and Theo must come to her rescue. And
there is a lot more trouble on the way…
3.
I Want Your Sex
Pretty self-explanatory!
I used this to evoke Sar’s passion for Theo…and hers for him, when she dances
to this song for him near a jukebox. There is no song that better brings out
the sexiness in a woman…or lust in the man watching her dance.
4.
Think of Me
This
is a song from the Broadway play the Phantom of the Opera. I included it to
lead into Devlin’s part of the story in trying to make a play for Sar…and
because I’m fond of singing it myself. Sar sings it with her window open as
she’s doing the dishes and Devlin hears her…prompting him to ask her if she’d
like to work with him to refine her singing, as he used to be a professional
bard.
5.
Music of the Night
Devlin
sings the last few verses of this to Sar, when she scoffs at his offer to help
her with her singing. Hearing his flawless voice, Sar agrees to think about it.
But its double meaning is that this song is sung to the heroine of Phantom of
the Opera by the Phantom in his efforts to seduce her…just as Devlin has set
his sights on seducing Sar.
6.
All I Ask of You
And the first few stanzas of a third
song from Phantom of the Opera sung by Devlin to Sar, when she breaks down
crying, upset at his news that a dangerous man that wants her dead will not stop his pursuit of
her, in spite of Theo’s and her former paramour Danial’s best efforts. But this song has a twist,
as it’s not sung in the movie by the Phantom…but by the heroine’s true love, the man she lives happily ever
after with. This together with the previous
song was done to represent Devlin’s dual role in the book, both as a force for evil…and for good.
7.
Hero
I don’t name all
the songs that Devlin sings to Sar in the day they spend together…I took out
the names in the final version, so readers would imagine their own favorite
songs. But when I wrote the passage, this was one of the ones I thought of, to
represent Devlin’s longing to be something other than a villain…and his concern
that Sar will ever accept him as her hero.
Would you dance, if I asked you to dance?
Would run, and never look back?
Would you cry if you saw me crying?
Would you save my soul tonight?
I can be your hero, baby
I can kiss away the pain
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away
Am I in too deep?
Have I lost my mind?
I don’t care. You’re here tonight.
I can be your hero.
8.
Heaven
Yet another song
that I envisioned Devlin singing to Sar, per #7 above, to emphasize that Devlin
truly believes he’s in love with Sar.
9.
Love – Kenny
Loggins
This song is much
different from the previous ones. While it is about love, it’s not romantic
love, but instead the love of a mother for her child. Sar sings it to her
half-vampire son, Theoron…and right after, he says his first word, which is
“luv.” It’s a very simple song, yet very beautiful.
Love is wanting to be loved
Love is asking to be loved
Love is you
You and Me
10. Fire and Rain
As much as all
the previous songs might have been meaningful and powerful, this song is the
key one that represents Taken For His Own.
At the beginning of the book, Sar thought she had her life back on track after
losing Theo. But then she learned Theo was alive…and since then, everything she
thought she knew for certain has gotten very complicated and confusing. Theo
was not only alive…he’d moved on to a werecougar like himself. Theo’s daughter
Elle won’t accept him as her father; she favors the vampire Danial, who raised
her. Sar thought she was happy with Danial, but with the reappearance of Theo,
Sar isn’t sure anymore what she wants and chooses Theo. Danial quickly finds
another lover, which angers Sar. Danial’s moving on with Monica was bad enough,
but then Monica tries to hand Sar over to the man hunting her to get her
completely out of the way. Sar kills Monica, and is nearly killed herself
before a rescue by Devlin. Devlin acts the hero then becomes a villain,
seducing her with more than a little threat. But their day spent together not
only evokes sexual feelings in Sar, but also romantic ones, something Sar
doesn’t welcome with her history of former reciprocated hatred with him. Sar’s
wanton behavior with him—and his brother Danial—leads Sar and her friends to
believe she is turning into a vampire, yet another crisis point. At the close
of the book, Sar is still with Theo and they have agreed to work through her apparent
illness, because they love each other. But they are a far cry from the happy
couple that reunited in the first few chapters of the book.
Been walking my mind to an easy time
My back turned toward the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it can turn your
head around
Well there’s hours of time on the telephone line to
talk about things to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the
ground
11. Desperado
Why did I
include this? Give me a good reason in a
comment below! Best reason gets a black T-shirt with the cover of Taken in the
Night on it as a prize! (size large)
Blurb: After
learning Theo is alive, Sar immediately embarks on a mission to find him.
Reunited, the lovers return to New York; Danial, Terian and
Theo uneasily combining forces to protect Sar from Al’s assassins
still seeking her. But when Sar is taken prisoner in an all-out
attack, only one man can save her: her old adversary, Devlin.

Excerpt:
I cried a few tears, turned out
the light and let my mind drift. Just as I was falling asleep, I remembered the
potion. Terian had said the potion would recreate the dream with Theo, but that
when it ended, the dream would fade from memory.
I needed to put my feelings for
Theo to rest and let him get on with his life. It was time to be done with
dreams and get back to reality.
I turned the light back on and
got up, rummaging around in my duffel bag. I found it and spent a few minutes
removing the vial from the bubble wrap I’d taped around it for safekeeping. I
uncorked the top and drank. The taste was bitter. This was it, the end of him
and me. I packed the empty potion vial for Terian for reuse, then lay down. I
drifted in a sleep-sort of fog and finally begin to dream.
It was my home, my farm. Again, I
stood there, calling out to Theo to wait, not to leave.
Again, he stood motionless at the
door for a second and then he turned to me, riding me to the floor. Kissing me
roughly, as we tore off our clothes as fast as we could.
Every memory came back in full
force, sweeping me away in a storm of emotion. It washed away the years with
Danial, even everything I felt for Elle and Theoron. There was only Theo and I.
We were one.
Theo made love to me again and
again. I relished his body next to mine, his muscles holding me, moving me,
pleasuring me. Soreness set in as night fell, but I renewed my efforts, knowing
that the end was near. As Theo finished and reached for me, I pushed him away.
“Sar?” he said questioningly, his
eyes worried, his hand outstretched.
In a few seconds, Danial’s voice
would sound. This was it, the end.
In desperation, I shouted, “Theo,
I love you, I love you more than anything or anyone. I’ll love you the rest of
my life!”
As my words tore out of me,
Theo’s body flickered. Suddenly thin scars appeared on his shoulders from a
whip, the edges raised and red, then similar scars on his chest. A mass of scar
tissue bloomed whitely on his hip.
I lunged for his outstretched
hand as he faded before me.
I fell out of the motel room bed,
landing on the floor. The room reeked with the odor of lovemaking, the odor of
sex.
“God damn it, no!” I screamed at
the top of my lungs.
I’d fucked up badly. I’d
forgotten Terian’s words to me the night he’d given me the potion, telling me
about the dream it would create for me one last time.
“And
he’s not here to renew it with you…”
Terian had said it, thinking as I
did that Theo was dead. But Theo wasn’t dead, he was alive. I’d reached out and
touched him again with another dream. Moreover, this time, he’d know
immediately that what had happened was no regular dream. He’d come looking for
me, remembering the scent he’d caught wind of a week ago.
God, I had to get gone as fast as
I could!
I threw on some clothes and
frantically gathered up my things. There was no time for a shower or food. We
had to get moving!
I grabbed up my duffel and ran
for the door, my keys in my hand. A footstep sounded outside my door and then
the door was kicked open, flying back hard to slam the outer wall.
Theo stood there breathing hard,
his eyes dark as a storm. He reeked of sex the way I did.
I hoped for his sake he’d woken
up alone.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
he said, his voice deep and rough. He slammed the door behind him and locked
it.
“Theo, I—”
“You are going nowhere, Sar.” He
strode over, anger pouring off him. He grabbed my keys and threw them. My
duffel followed. He pushed me to the bed roughly, then covered my body with his
own. “You want me so bad, Sar, here I am,” he snarled, his eyes gone yellow.
His fingers were claws, digging into my skin.
I closed my eyes, trembling.
He put his hand on the side of my
face and gripped my jaw. “Open your eyes,” he said roughly.
I opened them, my vision swimming
with tears.
“Don’t cry, Sar. You wanted this badly enough
to send me another dream.”
“I’m sorry—”
He bared his fangs at me in a
snarl and roared deafeningly. I shrank back from him as much as possible.

What's new?
Hi all!
Well, the summer's here and so are so many new Authors! I've been promoting my butt off on my dedicated Author's blog:
www.jodiepierceauthor.blogspot.com
There you will find all kinds of new Authors and their newest releases. I've picked up a couple new book tour companies to help promote so there is something new on my blog almost every day.
I'm still accepting submissions for In Vein, my vampire charity anthology until August 1st. It will be released on Halloween 2013. All proceeds are going to go to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital so make sure you check it out! I've got some great Authors on board and it's shaping up to be a great book! For more information, check out my other blog:
www.vampiricallyrical.blogspot.com
I have also started my own publishing company at the above blog where I am helping out new Authors. The anthology will be the premiere publication for the company. I'm working hard and loving every minute of it.
I'm also helping out fellow Authors by organizing blog hops and facebook events for them. I am only doing one per month so I can put all my focus into the events. It's been great and I couldn't do it without all my excellent fellow Authors and Bloggers. Thanks!
Keep Writing!
